In 1968, somewhere off the coast of Great Britain, a merchant vessel sunk into oblivion. Just before, its captain radioed a mayday signal repeating a simple string of numbers: 580777787253. The signal was picked up, the message logged and the mystery buried.
40 years later, while searching through maritime records for ships lost at sea, an old Danish friend of the artist came across the cryptic message. He deduced that the numbers were coordinates on a remote piece of coast in Norway and embarked to their heading. Remarkably, at the precise location was a small shrine adorned with symbols and buried beneath it, a steel container stamped with the words Crown Ethers. Inside was found a collection of cryptic journals bound in
metal, wood and bone. Though many of the journals have yet to be deciphered, it is clear that each one contains a story and coordinates to a container that surely will concede its secrets.
Micro-Grain Recordings is pleased to present the first, limited run, artifact and soundscape cassette release of Crown Ethers titled “11-Crown-8” by A Box in The Sea. This first installment is dedicated to the shrine under which the journals were found and serves as a celebration of this gorgeous mystery.
Each handmade box is a treasure hunt of symbolism, with hidden bonus tracks and generative algorithms. Every detail, from the hand-assembled, meticulously cut cardboard, to the beautiful gold ink silkscreened graphics and all the artifacts within, come direct from the artist. The eleven sonic offerings on the included cassette are fused with rich, dark and shimmering tonalities that oscillate the listener's imagination to depths rarely fathomed.
This run is strictly limited to 100 physical copies. Each box is made to order and we will send you an email when yours is ready to ship.
